Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, Can you heat a room with an air conditioner?

Are you wondering whether you can use your air conditioner to heat up your room? Have you checked your air conditioner to see whether it has a heating function? If it does not have the heating function, you can’t use it to heat up your room. However, if it does have the heating function and it has been set up properly by the Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning professional, you can switch on the heating function and use it to heat up your room.

Not all the air-conditioners have this function. In fact, it won’t be wrong to say that most of the air-conditioners do not have the heating function but there are a few models that come with this function and those models can be used as a heater. If you are planning to buy a new air-conditioner, it’s better to buy a unit that also comes equipped with the heating function instead of a unit that only comes with the cooling function. If that is the case, you will have to invest in another heater separately and that is going to be an expensive purchase. If the fact that that an air-conditioner which is primarily used for cooling can also be used for heating seems like something straight out of science fiction, you need to brush up a bit on science.

An air-conditioner is essentially a heat pump. You must have heard the term heat pump in school. In simple terms, it means that heat pump is a device that moves heat from one place to another. An air-conditioner is essentially a heat pump as it moves heat from your room to the outdoors which, in turn, brings down the temperature in your room. If an air-conditioner has to work has a heater, it will work as a heat pump but the direction will be reversed. If you know anything about the working of an air-conditioner, you would know that there is a series of components that work in tandem in order to transfer heat from inside a room to the outdoors. When this air-conditioner is switched into the heater mode, it just reverses the process. The coolant inside the air-conditioner shifts direction which means the cold coils become hot and the hot coils become cold.

You now know that an air-conditioner can also be used as a heater provided it has the technology inside. You just need to flick a switch and start using it as a space heater. Even though it’s possible that does not mean that you should be doing it. After all, space heaters are incredibly cheap and don’t take too much space. You might be surprised when you realize that an air-conditioner is more energy-efficient as compared to a conventional resistance heater. In short, your air-conditioner when it is running in heating mode will consume less electricity to produce the same amount of heat as compared to a conventional resistance heater. This is due to the reason that a heat pump transfers the heat and it does not create the heat whereas a conventional resistance heater uses electricity to create heat which makes the process less efficient as compared to the process used by a heat pump.

Using an air-conditioner as a heater is also environmentally friendly as you don’t need to buy two separate appliances for heating and cooling. It also saves you money. However, there are a few things you need to take into account before you buy that new air-conditioner with the heating function. An air-conditioner will need to be vented outside which means you will need to call in a professional for installation. Also, an air-conditioner is designed to condition the air which means it will remove humidity or moisture from the air even when it is working in the heating mode. Using a heat pump as a heating source is efficient only when the temperature inside the room is above a particular point. If the temperature is too low inside a room, it is not going to be as effective as a conventional space heater.

Overall, you can use your air-conditioner as a heating source if it has a heating mode. It offers a number of advantages but you also need to be aware of its limitations as mentioned above. So, go through the pros and cons of using your air-conditioner as a heater and if the pros outweigh the cons for you, invest in a high quality AC unit with heating mode and enjoy your savings.
